Russia said it had completed large-scale tests of new laser systems to protect against drones, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The Russian government issued a statement describing the new technology as "promising" and adding that it had been tested against various types of drones in different weather conditions. The text says that the lasers could become part of the "universal air defense system", the need for which was indicated earlier this week by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The test results will be used to improve existing models and create systems capable of providing reliable protection against modern air attack weapons. Carrying out the tests allows us to move to serial production," the statement also reads. The Russian government also released a video showing charred debris from a drone.

Both Russia and Ukraine have used a large number of drones in their more than three-year war. Their use includes detecting and striking targets not only on the battlefield but also far from the front line.

Ukrainian drones have frequently carried out strikes deep inside Russian territory, including against oil depots, refineries and airports.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian drones that had been smuggled and placed in trucks near air bases caused serious damage to Russian strategic aviation.
