Mexican authorities plan to raise tariffs on goods imported from China, in accordance with a long-standing request by US President Donald Trump, Bloomberg reported, citing its own sources.

According to them, the increase in tariffs will affect cars, textiles and plastic products supplied by China. Higher tariffs are also expected to be imposed on other Asian countries. A final decision on the size of the tariffs has not yet been made.

The pressure from Washington is explained by the desire to prevent the import of cheap Chinese goods into the United States, Bloomberg writes. The US administration claims that products from China are first imported to Mexico, and then from there to the United States.

The agency recalls that the Trump administration has long asked the Mexican leadership to impose higher import duties on goods from China in order to protect its own products from high tariffs. In late February, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick discussed this issue with Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
