Hungary has filed a lawsuit against the Council of the EU and the European Peace Facility, challenging their decision to use frozen Russian assets to finance military aid to Ukraine.
According to the newspaper „Magyar Nemzet“, which is close to the government, the case was sent to the Court of Justice of the EU in June and was accepted for consideration on August 25.
According to the publication, Budapest believes that the decision of the Council of the EU and the management of the European Peace Facility is illegal, as it was taken without taking into account Hungary's opinion. We are talking about the Brussels decision of February 2025, according to which 99.7% of the net profit from the management of frozen Russian assets will be sent to the European Peace Fund, ensuring continuous financing for military support to Ukraine in the amount of 3-5 billion euros per year.
The date for considering the case has not yet been set. As noted by “Magyar Nemzet“, this case may drag on for years. Meanwhile, according to the publication's calculations, 11 billion euros have already been allocated from the European Peace Fund to provide military assistance to Ukraine.
