American doctors have registered the first case of human infection with the larvae of the American butcher fly in the United States, Reuters reported, citing its own sources.

According to the agency, the infection was detected in a person who arrived in Maryland from Guatemala. As Reuters notes, information about the first case of human infection with the larvae of the insect in the United States was reported to US veterinarians, as well as the Livestock Producers Association.

Representatives of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Maryland Department of Health did not comment on this information to the agency.

The larvae of the American butcher fly feed on the meat of cattle and other warm-blooded animals. An initial outbreak of fly infestation was recorded in Central America and southern Mexico, after which the parasites spread to other regions.
