The Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) has revealed cases of incorrect currency conversion of prices in pharmacies, including online retailers, during massive inspections across the country, news.bg reported.

Violations that include rounding to the detriment of the consumer and use of an incorrect exchange rate will be officially sanctioned after August 8, warned CPC Chairperson Maria Filipova.

According to the CPC, the most common violations are related to a discrepancy between the price in leva and its equivalent value in euros, with some labels using a rate different from the fixed one — 1 euro = 1.95583 leva. In other cases, the final price in euros is rounded up, which harms consumers.

"Our observations in pharmacies show attempts at incorrect currency conversion on the packaging at the moment. After August 8, this will be sanctioned as a violation of the law," Filipova said.

The identified cases will be treated as violations of the Law on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria, which requires pricing to be fully transparent and correct during the transition period to the common European currency.
