British director and Oscar winner Peter Watkins has died at the age of 91, The Guardian reported.
Watkins died on October 30 in a hospital in the French commune of Bourgogne, where he had lived for 25 years, according to a statement from his family, quoted by the newspaper.
The director won an “Oscar“ for his 1967 documentary drama “The War Game“, about a nuclear attack on the United Kingdom, the newspaper noted. Subsequently, Watkins “came into conflict“ with the British radio and television corporation BBC, which forced him “to look for work in abroad“.
Watkins was born in 1935 in Norbiton, England. After serving in the army, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He directed 17 films.
