Two years after being part of the elite of Italian football, Sampdoria suffered another heavy blow in its recent history — the team was relegated to Serie "C".
This became a fact after a goalless draw at Juve Stabia in the last 38th round of Serie "B". The disappointment for the Genoa team is enormous, since before the start of the round it was in 16th place, with an equal number of points with 15th-placed Brescia.
If Sampdoria had climbed just one position, they would have saved themselves directly. Even if they had kept 16th place, the team would have had a chance to survive through the playoffs. Brescia, however, beat Reggiana 2-1 at home, meaning that even if Sampdoria had won, they would still have been below the mark due to a worse goal difference.
This means Sampdoria have slipped to 18th place, which means direct relegation and for the first time in their history they will play in the third tier of Italian football. Meanwhile, Salernitana and Frosinone will face off in a play-off for survival.
