Iran produces a lot of gas, but 85% of it goes to power plants to produce electricity. This is the difference between Iran and other countries, in which a similar percentage can be achieved thanks to nuclear energy and natural gas energy. The strike against the “Pars“ field is an attempt to block Iran, to block the functioning of the state in general through a serious strike on electricity generation. The problem, however, is that this field is in the sea. It is divided between Qatar and Iran. Qatar has used the opportunity in recent years to extract larger quantities of gas, since Iran is under sanctions and its technologies were limited. But now Iran has retaliated against important Qatari energy-related facilities. This was stated to Lili Marinkova in the studio “FACTS“ and the program “Conversation“ by political scientist Marian Karagyozov.

“All this is a consequence of these extremely irresponsible attacks on civilian infrastructure - both Israeli, American, and Iranian. The problem is that the whole world will suffer the consequences of these actions. Prices are starting to increase. There are three countries in the world with the largest gas reserves - Russia, Iran, and Qatar. Russia was excluded from the international gas market after the war in Ukraine began, after the EU refused to buy Russian gas and imposed sanctions. Iran also has huge domestic consumption - about 250-270 billion cubic meters per year, while Bulgaria consumes about 3 billion - just for comparison. Thus, Iran also remains outside the major markets, and the third major supplier remains Qatar, but this is already a problem“, the guest added.

“The limited and destroyed gas infrastructure means that there will be less gas in the coming months. This means that we - as consumers - will have to compete for these reduced volumes. This means that prices will rise. At the moment, this is a problem for Europe, because Europe is paying the price of a war started by others. The US is a major ally of Europe, but in fact Europe is the bigger victim of this conflict“, Karagyozov also shared.
