Two people have died and 17 others are missing after Typhoon Boiloy made landfall in Vietnam, "Reuters" reports, BTA reports.

Houses were damaged and power lines were cut. The storm caused flooding and huge waves before losing some of its strength as it headed towards Laos.

The national meteorological agency said Bualoi had caused waves up to eight metres high.

One person died in flooding in the city of Hue and another was killed by a falling tree in Thanh Hoa province.

17 fishermen are missing after huge waves hit two fishing boats off Quang Tri province, while another boat lost contact during the storm.

"I have witnessed many storms and this is one of the strongest", said Nguyen Tuan Vinh, 45, from Nghe An province.

At 11:00 local time, the typhoon was heading from Nghe An province towards Laos, with maximum wind speeds dropping to 74 km/h from 117 km/h when it reached land.

Boilaoy damaged 245 houses, flooded nearly 1,400 hectares of rice fields and other crops, and cut off access to several areas.

Ahead of the storm, the government evacuated more than 28,500 people, and hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed as four airports in central provinces were closed.

The cyclone has brought torrential rain to much of Vietnam since Saturday, and authorities have warned of the risk of severe flooding and landslides.

The meteorological agency predicts rainfall in some parts of the country could reach 500 millimeters between yesterday evening and tomorrow.

With a long coastline on the South China Sea, Vietnam is often subject to typhoons that form east of the Philippines, where Boilaoy killed at least ten people last week.
