Pope Leo XIV criticized the US government's immigration policy on Wednesday, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

"Someone who says he is against abortion but supports the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States - I don't know if that position is pro-life," the pope told reporters.

The Holy Father made his statement in response to a question from an American journalist who asked him about US policies.

The White House said Trump was re-elected president because of his many promises, including to deport illegal immigrants and criminal aliens.

Pope Leo, who was elected in May to succeed the late Pope Francis, has demonstrated a much more restrained style by his predecessor, who was a frequent critic of the Trump administration.

Leo was asked about the award given by the Chicago church to a Democratic senator who supports abortion rights. The award has drawn fierce criticism from conservative Catholic circles.

"It is important to pay attention to the senator's overall work," Pope Leo said, stating that "someone who says he is against abortion but supports the death penalty is not really taking a pro-life position."
