Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg will abdicate from the throne today after 25 years as head of state, the Associated Press reports, BTA reports.

His successor will be his eldest son, Crown Prince Guillaume, passing the monarchy at the heart of Europe to a new generation.

Over the years, Henri has played a largely ceremonial role alongside his wife, Cuban-born Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

While the monarch has embodied the country's tradition and unity, the government has guided Luxembourg through difficult times, including the 2008 financial crisis - the country's biggest economic shock since the 1970s.
