Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that another US attack on a vessel in the Caribbean Sea was directed against a Colombian ship with Colombian citizens on board, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday the previous evening's attack on a vessel that the US says was used for drug trafficking. With this move, Colombia finds itself involved in the US naval campaign against drug trafficking ships off the coast of Venezuela, the British news agency commented.
"There are indications that another ship attacked was Colombian and had Colombian citizens on board", Petro wrote on the social network "Ex". "The aggression is directed against all of Latin America and the Caribbean," the Colombian president added.
The White House and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
In recent weeks, the US Navy has carried out at least four strikes on vessels belonging to suspected drug traffickers, with US authorities saying 21 people were killed in the operations. The attacks have heightened tensions in the region and Washington cut diplomatic ties with Venezuela on Monday.
Venezuela also began military exercises in the coastal states of La Guaira and Carabobo on Monday.
Petro is currently in Brussels for a meeting with European leaders. His publication in "Ex" was in connection with the statement of US Senator Adam Schiff that he would vote to block the strikes against ships in the Caribbean Sea.
