New blow to Javier Milley! His powers to issue decrees have been limited

The decision is up to the lower house of the Argentine parliament, which approved the relevant draft law

The lower house of the Argentine parliament has approved a draft law to limit the president's powers to issue decrees, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The decision of the deputies is a challenge to Javier Milley, whose party "Liberty Comes" has a minority in both chambers of the legislature. Milley, however, retains his right to veto the bill.

The ruling party said that if the new texts are adopted, they will destabilize the political situation and create legal uncertainty. But critics say the president is issuing too many decrees, damaging state institutions.

The new legislative measures will allow the opposition in either chamber of parliament to block presidential decrees with a simple majority, forcing Milley's government to seek a broader consensus on its governing program.

Argentina will hold midterm elections on October 26, which are seen as a crucial test for the president. If "Liberty Comes" fails to garner enough votes, Milley will find it very difficult to push through his planned reforms.
