Iran has stepped up repression inside the country since the war with Israel in June, a UN commission of inquiry reported, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.

The organization expresses serious concern over the increasing violations of the rights of minorities, journalists and civil society.

The chairwoman of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran, Sarah Hossein, told the UN General Assembly that “data collected since March this year show a deterioration in the human rights situation in Iran“.

Limiting civil liberties and mass arrests

Hossein stressed that the repression that began after the Israeli air strikes in June had further restricted civil space, undermined due process and violated the right to life.

She drew special attention to the 21,000 people arrested by the Iranian authorities during the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.
According to her, among them are lawyers, human rights activists, journalists and social media users detained simply for publishing content related to the military operations.

Pressure on minorities and record number of executions

The UN representative noted that persecution of ethnic and religious minorities under the pretext of national security has also intensified.
Hossein also expressed alarm at the dramatically increased number of executions in the country.

„According to reliable data, more than 1,200 people have been executed since the beginning of the year - a number that already exceeds the total for 2024, when Iran set a record for executions since 2015“,
she pointed out.

Israeli strikes on “Evin“ prison and Tehran's reaction

The UN mission has also examined the deadly Israeli strikes on “Evin“ prison in Iran.
According to the preliminary investigation, the attacks hit civilian buildings in the complex, which are not legitimate military targets, and were likely carried out deliberately.

At the same time, Iranian authorities may not have taken sufficient measures to protect detainees who were evacuated after the strikes. Some of their families have not received any information for weeks, Hossein stressed.
