Two men were arrested last night after a number of passengers were stabbed on a train to Huntingdon, East Anglia, British police said, quoted by Reuters and BTA.
According to PA Media and DPA, a witness pointed out to officers a man with a large knife after the mass bloodshed.
Cambridgeshire Police said they had sent officers at 7:39 p.m. local time (9:39 p.m. Bulgarian time) after receiving reports that several people had been stabbed with knives on the train.
"Armed officers were mobilized and the train was stopped at Huntingdon, where two men were arrested. "A number of people were taken to hospital," the police statement said. More than 30 police officers were deployed to the station, PA Media reported.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on the social media platform "Ex" that the "horrifying incident" was deeply concerning.
"My thoughts are with all those affected and I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the emergency services for their response. Everyone in the area should follow the police instructions," the prime minister said.
According to the British newspaper "The Times" people were hiding in the toilets in panic. A witness told the publication that there was "blood everywhere" and that people were "trampled" in the stampede by others.
The Sun quoted another eyewitness as saying it was "like a movie". "It was a horrific sight", he said.
The attack is believed to have started shortly after the train left Peterborough.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she was "deeply saddened" to hear of the bloodshed. "I would urge people at this early stage (of the investigation - ed.) to avoid comment and jumping to conclusions", she said.
