Zohran Mamdani, a socialist and Palestinian protester, could become New York's new mayor, BILD reports.

34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a left-wing Democrat and son of Indian immigrants, is emerging as the frontrunner in the New York mayoral election. He could become the first Muslim and openly socialist to lead the largest city in the US, home to the largest Jewish community outside Israel.

According to the latest polls, Mamdani leads former Governor Andrew Cuomo by a comfortable 25 percentage points.

Experts say Mamdani “exploits his rivals“ and his support comes mainly from young voters frustrated by rising prices and the housing crisis. Mamdani promises free public transport, kindergartens and city supermarkets and proposes to finance these measures by raising taxes on the rich. Mamdani, however, is a controversial figure. He has participated in protests under the slogan “Globalize the Intifada“, which many Jewish organizations perceive as a threat. In addition, his critics point out that this “defender of the poor“ grew up in a $2 million loft.

President Donald Trump has already called him “a communist lunatic who will ruin New York“. According to American media, the US Department of Justice is investigating the sources of his campaign funding and even the legality of his citizenship. The elections are on November 4: if these predictions are confirmed, Mamdani could take office as early as January 1, 2026.
