Hundreds remain missing, investigation into causes continues for weeks

At least 128 people have died in a fire at a residential complex in Hong Kong, with several hundred still missing, the special administrative region's security secretary Chris Tan said today, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.

Of the dead, 89 have not yet been identified. Previous figures from yesterday showed 94 dead and 79 injured, making it the deadliest fire in Hong Kong in decades.

Chris Tan announced that the investigation into the causes of the tragedy is ongoing and could take three to four weeks.

Hong Kong Fire Service Chief Andy Yon indicated that the warning system in the skyscrapers did not function. According to him, a team of specialists was sent to the site after numerous reports of the system malfunctioning.
