The European Union (EU) prefers to ignore its own corruption problems, but constantly lecturing others. This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova to TASS, commenting on the detention of former head of European diplomacy Federica Mogherini, Focus reports.

"In the EU, millions of euros flow daily through "corruption pipes" to Kiev, and from there into private pockets. This has been happening for years and is happening in front of everyone's eyes. Every international problem is an opportunity for Brussels to profit. From the COVID-19 pandemic to Ukraine. Meanwhile, they prefer to ignore their own problems, but constantly lecture everyone else,” Zakharova notes.

Earlier, AFP reported that Mogherini had been detained by Belgian police as part of an investigation into allegations of corruption in the EU diplomatic service.

Earlier, the European Commission and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office officially confirmed the arrest of three people during searches by Belgian police at the headquarters of the European External Action Service in Brussels, the College of Europe in Bruges and several private homes. The arrested are accused of fraudulent schemes involving EU-funded construction tenders.
