At least 13 people have died and 98 have been injured in a train derailment in Mexico, the country's President Claudia Sheinbaum said.
“The Ministry of the Navy informed me that unfortunately 13 people have died as a result of a train accident. 98 have been injured, five of whom are in serious condition“, Sheinbaum wrote in a statement.
According to her, the injured are being treated at hospitals of the Social Security Institute in the cities of Matias Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as at medical facilities in the cities of Juchitán and Ixtepec. Sheinbaum added that Navy Secretary Raymundo Pedro Morales Angeles has been dispatched to the scene of the tragedy.
Mexico's Navy Ministry previously reported that the lead locomotive of a train derailed near the town of Nisanda, Oaxaca, on December 29. The train was carrying nine employees and 241 passengers. The train consisted of two locomotives and four passenger cars.
