The Palestinian movement Hamas has confirmed the death of the leader and spokesman for its military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, a spokesman for the radical movement said.

“The leader of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, Mohammed Sinwar, has been killed in Gaza. We also confirm that the group's spokesman, Abu Ubaydah, has been killed, but we will continue his work”, stressed the new spokesman for Hamas's armed wing. His name has not yet been revealed. The militants also confirmed that the commander of one of the group's units operating in the southern Gaza Strip had been killed along with Sinwar.

The Israeli army officially announced Sinwar's death on May 31. The military said he and several Hamas field commanders were killed on May 13 in a targeted strike on the European Hospital near Khan Yunis in the southern Palestinian enclave. The Israeli army press service reported that the militants' headquarters were located under the hospital building where Sinwar was located at the time of the attack.

Three months later, on August 31, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the killing of Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades spokesman Abu Ubaydah. Hamas did not comment on these reports.
