The head of European Union diplomacy, Kaia Kallas, pointed out to the US that the situation with freedom of speech there is worse than in Estonia. She made the statement at a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference.

In response to a question from the moderator about US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's criticism of Europe's worsening problems with freedom of speech, she said: "I come from a country that is ranked second in terms of freedom of speech, and it's interesting to hear criticism of freedom of speech from a country that is ranked 58th," she said, without specifying which ranking she was basing her remarks on.

However, when the moderator asked whether this meant a conflict between Europe and the US, she immediately countered that it only meant that "the EU and the US are closely intertwined."
