The Russian Defense Ministry announced today that the country's armed forces had shot down two British "Storm Shadow" missiles in the past 24 hours, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Earlier today, Ukraine said it had struck with "Storm Shadow" missiles yesterday on a key missile parts manufacturing plant in the Russian city of Bryansk.
The governor of Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, said six civilians were killed and 42 wounded in the attack, but did not specify what the target was.
The Russian Defense Ministry also said its forces had captured the village of Chervona Zorya in Ukraine's Sumy region near the border between the two countries.
Ukrainian armed forces struck a key missile components manufacturing plant in Russia's border Bryansk region on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, as quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.
The Ukrainian military, for its part, said it had used British-made Storm Shadow missiles in the attack on the "Kremniy El" plant, and also released a video it said showed explosions and a fire at the factory. The statement noted that the plant produces key components for missiles.
These claims have not been independently verified.
"Our fighter jets hit one of the most important Russian military plants in the city of Bryansk," Zelensky said in his evening video address, citing a report by the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian military, Oleksandr Syrsky.
"The plant produced electronics and components for Russian missiles. It is the missiles that hit our cities, villages and people," he said.
The governor of the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, reported on the Telegram platform that six civilians were killed and 37 wounded in an attack in the region. He also posted a video from the scene of the attack.
Bogomaz did not mention the plant in the context of the "terrorist missile attack", as he described it.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the strike was premeditated and targeted civilians, calling on the UN to assess what happened.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces described the plant as a “key unit in the production process of Russian high-precision weapons“, producing semiconductor devices and integrated microchips.
“The target was hit and significant damage was recorded to the production facilities,“ the General Staff said. “The extent of the damage is being determined”, the headquarters added.
The published video shows satellite images of a series of explosions and large fires over a large area near a forest.
Reuters was able to confirm the location through buildings, road layout and a roundabout, which match the file and satellite images of the area.
“The Kiev regime deliberately targeted the civilian population. The UN Secretariat, which regularly comments on the situation surrounding the crisis in Ukraine, cannot ignore this,” Zakharova said in a post on Telegram.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking on the fourth anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion, called for an immediate ceasefire as a first step towards achieving peace.
He expressed concern about the “knock-on consequences of these blatant violations of international law” in connection with the Russian invasion.
