About 3,000 Myanmarese have crossed the border into Thailand in the past two days amid armed confrontation between government forces and ethnic fighters. “About 3,000 refugees from Myanmar have now moved to Thailand, all of whom are under the care of Ministry of Home Affairs officials,” said Thai Foreign Minister Panpri Phittanukon.

The fighting is taking place in Myanmar in the area of the border town of Muawadu, which is adjacent to the town of Mae Sot in Tak province in northwestern Thailand. According to Phitthanukon, Thailand is ready to start working as a mediator in the negotiation process between the parties to the conflict.

Myanmar's military overthrew the civilian government on February 1, 2021, based on a constitutional clause that made the military its primary guarantor. They accused a large-scale fraud in favor of the National League for Democracy in the parliamentary elections in November 2020. The country was plunged into a conflict whose victims, according to human rights activists, are more than 6 thousand people. According to the UN, about 2 million residents have become internally displaced.
