A fire broke out this morning in a large shopping center with 1,400 stores in Warsaw, AP reported, BTA reported.

The fire department said more than 80 percent of the building was engulfed in flames. Black smoke can be seen in the surrounding area on footage broadcast by the private Te Fau En 24 TV station.

Authorities sent text messages to warn residents of the Polish capital to stay indoors with windows closed. A police spokesman told the Polish Press Agency that there were no reports of casualties.

Malls and large stores are usually closed on Sundays due to a ban imposed by the previous government. In imposing the ban, the cabinet of the "Law and Justice" party, which is close to the Catholic Church, cited the reason that Sunday is a day for going to church. These outlets are only allowed to open a few Sundays a year so people can shop for Christmas, Easter and other holidays.
