Guterres condemned the Israeli strikes near Rafah, Canada is "horrified"

Australia also called for a ceasefire

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the Israeli airstrikes near Rafah in the Gaza Strip, DPA reported, quoted by BTA .

"I condemn the actions of Israel, which led to the death of a large number of innocent civilians who were simply trying to escape this deadly conflict,", Guterres wrote yesterday on the social network "X".

"There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop", urged the Secretary General.

The Palestinian Islamist movement controlled "Hamas" Health authorities in the Gaza Strip said 45 people were killed and dozens injured in an airstrike that hit tents of displaced people.

Most of the victims of the airstrike were women and children, Gaza health authorities also said.

The UN Security Council will hold an extraordinary meeting today regarding the airstrike, DPA reported.

The extraordinary meeting was requested by Algeria, and the Algerian request was supported by Slovenia, diplomats said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Canada also called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

"We are horrified by the strikes that killed Palestinian civilians in Rafah," Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie wrote on the "X" social network.

"Canada does not support an Israeli military operation in Rafah. This great human suffering must end. We insist on an immediate ceasefire," Jolie's statement said.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after Israeli airstrikes near the city of Rafah, DPA reported.

"The events of the last 24 hours highlight the need for a humanitarian ceasefire to protect civilians," the Australian minister said in a statement in "X".

Israel launched its operation in the Gaza Strip after on October 7 last year, fighters of "Hamas" carried out an unprecedented attack on the Jewish state.
