Peru's attorney general's office yesterday filed a constitutional complaint against President Dina Boluarte in a case related to luxury watches, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The case has become a national scandal, which could lead to the removal of Boluarte from office.

The complaint was filed against the backdrop of a new drop in the popularity of the already unpopular leader, Reuters noted, citing polls.

The complaint contains an accusation against Boluarte that she received a bribe. If Peru's Congress decides to act on the complaint, it could lead to the removal of the president.

Peru's turbulent politics has been marked in recent years by removals of presidents, with parliamentarians often playing a leading role in these proceedings.

Boluarte, who is a former vice president, has already been subjected to several interrogations and police searches in connection with her use of several "Rolex" watches. and jewelry, which contradicts her modest salary as a representative of state power.

She denies any wrongdoing and says the luxury items were loaned to her.

The bribery charge is the second constitutional complaint Boluarte has faced in less than two years in office.

Last November, Peru's attorney general filed a constitutional complaint against her over her handling of the unrest that followed the ouster of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo.

In late 2022, Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress before a vote could be taken to remove him from office. His fall from power and arrest were followed by weeks of angry protests that left at least 40 dead.
