Russia has announced that its forces have defused unexploded US munitions fired from Ukraine, which were dropped just 5 km from the Kursk nuclear power plant, reports "Reuters", quoted by News.bg .

Earlier, Moscow accused Ukrainian forces of trying to strike the plant.

The Russian National Guard supported its claim with video footage of the unexploded ordnance and sappers disarming it.

The news comes a day after the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, inspected the plant, which he said was vulnerable due to the lack of a protective dome to protect it from missiles, drones or artillery.

Until now, Ukraine has not commented on the alleged Russian find.

Ukrainian forces breached Russia's western border in the Kursk region on August 6 in a surprise incursion that is ongoing. The fighting is taking place about 40 km from the nuclear facility.

Ukraine has yet to respond to the accusation made last week by Russian President Vladimir Putin that it tried to attack the plant.

Grossi refused to specify whether he considered Ukraine responsible or not.

Russia's National Guard said its sappers found a projectile from the US-supplied HIMARS missile system 5km from the power plant and a fragment of a missile it said was packed with 180 unexploded ordnance.

Video shows two soldiers inspecting fragments of the missile, which they say was shot down by Russian air defenses and partially exploded in mid-air.

One of the inspected fragments is marked "GRENADES M101". The video shows sappers piling the ammunition into a hole in the ground and detonating it using a controlled explosion.
