Criticism: UN reprimands Israel for West Bank operation

Tel Aviv has launched a major military operation in the northern West Bank and blamed Iran for spreading terrorist infrastructure there

UN criticized Israel about the major military operation launched by the Israeli army in the northern parts of the West Bank, reported DPA, quoted by BTA.

People in that area are "increasingly exposed to deadly warfare tactics that seem to go beyond law enforcement standards," said Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the world body's secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, citing reports from side of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. "Israeli forces must abide by international policing standards, which stipulate that lethal force and the use of firearms should only be used as a last resort, and only when there is an immediate threat of death or serious injury."

Israel launched a major military operation in the northern West Bank and accused Iran of spreading terrorist infrastructure there. Against this background, Palestinian health authorities reported at least ten deaths.

The military has deployed large numbers of troops as well as drones and snipers, bulldozed infrastructure and blocked all approaches to the city of Jenin, according to media reports. Gunfights broke out with armed Palestinians, and several wanted Palestinians were detained.

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council called for an end to the increasingly violent exchange of attacks between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite movement "Hezbollah", the Associated Press reported.

The council warned that if the rise in tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border continued, it "dangered that it would lead to a large-scale conflict.

The resolution introduced by France calling for a ceasefire was adopted unanimously by the votes of all 15 member states of the Council.

On Sunday, massive strikes were exchanged between Israel and Hezbollah, but both sides stopped short and avoided further escalation. However, the long-standing conflict between them is still far from over, and tensions in the region stemming from the war in Gaza remain high.
