Israeli strike kills seven civilians in residential building in Damascus, injures 11

British Foreign Secretary leaves for Bahrain and Jordan in bid to secure ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon

Israeli strike strikes residential building in a suburb west of the Syrian capital Damascus, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA, referring to the Syrian state news agency.

According to preliminary information, as a result of the strike, seven civilians were killed and 11 were wounded, the Syrian media reported, citing a source in the armed forces and adding that heavy material damage was caused to private property in the area of the strike.

According to the cited source, the airstrike was carried out with three rockets fired from the Golan Heights.

Earlier, the state news agency said Syrian air defenses had intercepted "enemy" targets near Damascus.

Israel has been striking Iran-linked targets in Syria for years, but stepped up its attacks after the attack by the Palestinian group "Hamas" on Israeli territory since October 7 last year, which triggered the war in "Gaza", according to Reuters.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy warned today that countries must continue their efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.

„We must not relax at this critical moment so that we can achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, deliver the aid that Gaza desperately needs and release all hostages,” he said.

Lami, who will hold talks with leaders from Bahrain and Jordan and meet British military personnel stationed in the Middle East, described the situation as “extremely dangerous”. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he will “push for an end to the cycle of violence” and will express London's concerns about the “risk of escalation and misjudgment”.

The British foreign minister will also reiterate his country's calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and ask regional partners to urge Iran and its subordinate groups to exercise restraint.

In Bahrain, he will visit the frigate “Lancaster” of the Royal Navy, which is stationed in the country and patrols the waters of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf to counter the Houthi rebels in Yemen. He will also meet with “high-ranking personalities” in the country, and in Jordan he will talk with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, the Foreign Office added.
