The German government was not informed in advance of the recent Ukrainian drone attack on targets deep inside Russia, a cabinet spokesman in Berlin said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.

“The German government was not notified of the operation, but that was not necessary. Ukraine has the full right to defend itself in a war that violates international law“, the spokesman said.

In the context of the upcoming new round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which will take place today in Istanbul, Germany confirmed that Kiev remains open to dialogue. “Ukraine is ready to negotiate“, he added the spokesman.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will push for a “fair ceasefire“ during his first face-to-face meeting with US President Donald Trump, which will take place on Thursday in Washington. This was also confirmed by a German government spokesman.

“The Chancellor will use the opportunity to call on the US President to actively participate in diplomatic efforts, including by highlighting the possibility of sanctions“, he said.

According to him, the Chancellor is aware of the position of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who is pushing for stricter sanctions against Moscow, but Merz will not interfere in the internal processes of the US.
