US and China to meet for trade talks in London on June 9

Canadian PM says Canada is rebalancing relations with Beijing

US President Donald Trump said three senior officials from his administration will meet with Chinese officials in London on June 9 to discuss a trade deal, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

The US side will be represented by Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Trump said in a post on his social media platform "Truth Social".

"The meeting should go very well", he noted.

The scheduling of the meeting comes a day after a phone call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping amid weeks of trade tensions and a confrontation over critical minerals.

On May 12, the countries reached a 90-day deal to reduce some of the triple-digit tariffs they have imposed on each other since Trump took office in January.

However, the temporary agreement does not address the broader issues that have strained bilateral relations - from the illegal trade in fentanyl to the status of democratically ruled Taiwan and US dissatisfaction with China's state-dominated, export-oriented economic model, Reuters highlights.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his recent conversation with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang was “the beginning of a process of re-adjusting relations with China“ – a country with which Canada has had strained relations for years, Reuters reported.

“It is very important that we renew the dialogue with the Chinese authorities for a number of reasons“, Carney told reporters, adding that there are a number of bilateral trade disputes that need to be resolved.

He also mentioned the fentanyl trafficking.

Carney did not mention the human rights situation in China - an issue that a number of Canadian governments across the political spectrum have often expressed concerns about, Reuters noted.
