French President Emmanuel Macron said he discussed "the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East" with his American counterpart Donald Trump on the phone yesterday, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.

The agency notes that the conversation took place about ten days after the public tension between the two at the G-7 summit in Canada.

The Elysee Palace said that Trump called Macron "on the sidelines of the (meeting of the) European Council" in Brussels.

The French president is trying to demonstrate some closeness with his American counterpart, who, however, regularly criticizes him.

Trump, for example, assured that he did not leave the G-7 meeting because of the conflict between Israel and Iran, and accused Macron of presenting things that way.

In addition, the two never spoke on the sidelines of the NATO summit earlier this week in The Hague, which fueled speculation about a permanent rift in their relations, AFP reports.

Macron also commented in Brussels on the strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities carried out successively by Israel and the United States, stating that the "worst case scenario" would be for Iran to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. According to him, these attacks were indeed effective.

In the name of preserving this fundamental agreement, the French president announced that he would talk "in the coming days" with representatives of the other permanent members of the Security Council, namely Britain, Russia and China.
