European countries have lost their independence and are simply following the policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump regarding Iran's nuclear program.
This was stated by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian.
“Europeans are doing what Trump dictates to them“, he said. “The role of Europeans will decrease. If you look back at the leaders of European foreign policy throughout the history of the nuclear deal, you will see that Javier Solana, Katie Ashton, Federica Mogherini and Josep Borrell were trying to be a link between Iran and the US. They were trying to prove that they were reliable partners in the negotiations. But now the Europeans have decided to become proxies for the US and Israel. It was absolutely irresponsible of them to hand over this role to the US.“
Bagaei drew attention to the statements of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who, speaking about the Israeli strikes on Iran in June, said that Israel was doing the “dirty work“ for Western countries. “In a sense, all European countries approved Israel's actions and most likely provided information to the Israeli regime“, said the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman.
He stressed that Iran was ready to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if the UN Security Council reimposed sanctions on Tehran. In addition, Bagaeei warned the Israeli authorities against a new attack on Iran, which would inevitably lead to a retaliatory strike by the Islamic Republic. "We are ready because this is a matter of our dignity and sovereignty," the foreign ministry spokesman said, comparing the situation to the bombing of Britain during World War II.
"A special spirit developed in Britain after the bombing of Nazi Germany. We have the same spirit because we know that they fought against us during the negotiations, which was very unfair," he said. Baghaei added that the "illegal attacks" had angered the Iranian people and led to a decline in trust between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran. The official noted that under these circumstances, Iranian authorities have virtually no room for diplomatic maneuvering.
At the same time, Baghaei said that Iran is ready to reduce the level of enriched uranium to the 3.67% purity set in the previous nuclear deal, provided that a general agreement is reached that preserves Iran's right to enrich uranium on its domestic market. He questioned why the United States is so eager to strip Iran of its right to enrich uranium if, as Trump claims, Iran's ability to do so has already been destroyed by joint US-Israeli strikes.
