The National Road Infrastructure Management Company in Romania plans to install 400 video surveillance cameras on the main roads and motorways in the country. The cameras will be part of the national e-Sigur system and will detect both the instantaneous and average speed of vehicles, in order to combat traffic accidents, Ziare reports, BTA reports.

The system works so that if a car passes between two points faster than the permitted speed, the driver will automatically be fined. The cameras are equipped with radars and will be connected to a centralized system that calculates the average speed over a certain distance. “In practice, you will not be able to “lie” radar, moving slowly only past it“, said company spokesman Alin Șerbanescu. The fines will be sent by mail.

Most of the cameras will be located on national roads outside populated areas and on all motorways. Installation will begin next year, and on newer motorways, the cameras have already been installed and are about to be connected to the e-Sigur system.

In the first three months of 2025, more than 240 people died in road accidents in Romania and over 500 were injured, according to data from the local Ministry of the Interior. For the whole of 2024, the country registered 3,862 serious accidents, in which 1,333 people died and 2,980 were seriously injured, which means a mortality rate of 76 per million inhabitants - one of the highest levels in the EU.
