The construction of the outer protective shell, one of the main safety systems of the reactor compartment building, has been completed of Unit 1 of the “Akkuyu” NPP, built by “Rosatom” in Turkey, reported the press service of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC.
„Concreting of the dome was done in four stages and lasted 104 days. In total, 3,511 cubic meters of high-strength self-compacting concrete mixture was laid in this part of the NHS“, the report says. According to the general director of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC Sergey Butskyh, the completion of the concreting of the low-voltage zone will allow us to start the installation of another important element of the safety of the nuclear power plant - a passive heat removal system.
The outer protective shell is one of the main safety systems of the power unit. The low-pressure zone of the reactor vessel is made of reinforced concrete and is designed to withstand even the strongest elements: earthquakes with an intensity of up to 9 points on the MSK-64 scale and hurricanes with a force of up to 60 m/s. The reactor buildings of modern power units of Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors are equipped with a system of double (external and internal) protective shells. They ensure a high level of safety at the nuclear power plant. Inside the volume of the outer protective shell is an inner protective shell. It ensures the hermeticity of the area where the reactor plant is located, and also serves as a support for pipelines and a polar crane.
NPP "Akkuyu" is the first nuclear power plant to be built in the Republic of Turkey. "Akkuyu" NPP project consists of four power units with Russian VVER generation 3+ reactors. The capacity of each power unit will be 1200 MW. Construction of the "Akkuyu" NPP. - the first project in the global nuclear industry, realized according to the Build-Own-Operate model.
