The unclear origin of lamb is the most common violation in stores before Easter - 1

The most common violation in stores before Easter this year is unclear origin of lamb meat. This was explained on NOVA by Galya Vikyova, deputy chairman of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, quoted by FOCUS.

During the inspections in the last week, no serious violations were found, she specified.

"We always do increased checks around the holidays. The objects that are inspected are warehouses for retail and wholesale trade and those for public catering. The fact that it is not written whether the meat is Bulgarian or not – doesn't mean it's unfit, but it's still a violation. The consumer must make a choice", claims the deputy chairman of the BBAH.

Regarding eggs on the market, she commented that there is currently a wide variety of Bulgarian, Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian and Greek eggs.

"They must have the manufacturer's code, which means that it originates from a registered livestock facility where the health status of the animals is ensured," Galya Vikyova explained.

The expert also commented on the news about the detention of 12 batches of lemons with pesticides on the Bulgarian-Turkish border "Captain Andreevo".

"This is not a recent practice. "Captain Andreevo" is one of the entry points to the EU. Many consignments of fruits and vegetables pass through from third countries, mainly Turkey. There, border control takes samples for pesticide analysis. When such a thing is found, colleagues take appropriate measures – return to Turkey or destruction. About 7 percent of the lemons that last year were found to contain pesticides. Not all shipments are intended only for the Bulgarian market," Vikyova explained.
