Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world . It turns out that more and more Bulgarian families produce quality saffron, even after research in a French laboratory, the saffron produced on our territory takes the honorable third place, bTV reports.

In the first cold days of autumn, small purple crocuses appear from the ground, and in their heart - red stamens. Thousands of colors from the fields of ancient Persia and today's Iran to Western Europe, the Rhodopes and the fields of Sofia. And with every bend, another milligram of the most expensive spice in the world - saffron.

They call it “red gold“ of Europe, and it turns out – and Bulgaria.

Anni and Ludmil's family has been cultivating a small saffron field for several years. They often brew herbal tea and are sure of the medicinal properties of the spice.

They say that the climate and soils in Bulgaria are very suitable and they achieve first quality saffron almost with ease.

After research in a French laboratory, the saffron produced in Bulgaria ranks third in the world in terms of quality. That is why Prof. Nidal Shaban, Institute of Genetics and Plant Physiology at the BAS, together with scientists from Lebanon, decided to work towards extending the growing season of the product.
