New rules for honey labels. They provide for mandatory indication of the country of origin. The aim is to stop misleading consumers and limit unfair competition. The changes are part of a European directive that Bulgaria must implement, Nova TV reported.
The change in honey labels is pleasing to both beekeepers and lovers of real honey, because they will know who the producer is.
According to Vladimir Vassilev from the “True Honey” Foundation, the changes are a step forward, but do not completely solve the problem with imports. “The first question we need to ask ourselves is whether it is real. If it is not real, it does not give us the nutritional values we need”, said Vassilev.
“Honey is a superfood that should be part of everyone's diet. And we should do everything to get real. Instead of taking some random one from the store and charging the price”, says Vassilev.
The new rules stipulate that the label must contain the country of origin and the percentage of honey from each country in the mixture. According to experts, this will enable consumers to make an informed choice.
“These changes aim to improve consumer awareness and satisfy their interest in relation to the origin of honey. We all know that there is a very close relationship between the quality of honey and its geographical origin”, says Dr. Kremena Stoeva, Department “Food Control” at the Bulgarian Food and Drug Administration.
