Bulgaria's entry into the air Schengen, and not the comfort of passengers, forced changes to the project for the construction of the third terminal of “Sofia“ airport. The initial idea, that the terminal would be sleeveless, led to bewilderment as to how an airport terminal would be built without sleeves in the 21st century. However, our entry into the Schengen area required changes. Thus, Terminal 3 of the capital airport will have sleeves and the possibility to go from/to the planes on foot (the so-called WiWo – walk in, walk out).
Terminal 3 will be connected to Terminal 2 by a warm link, and the latter will be expanded with three arms adapted to welcome the largest passenger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 r Boeing 747. The construction of the third terminal will begin in the first quarter of 2026 and will last at least 3 years, Travelnews specifies.
Terminal 2 is undergoing reconstruction, during which time Terminal 1 will also operate. After that, Terminal 1 will be closed for repairs and will only serve private jets and VIP passengers.
