US tech giant Google plans to invest $1 billion in digital infrastructure development in Thailand, including the construction of two new data centers.
They will be located in Bangkok and the Chonburi Industrial Zone. They aim to meet the growing demand for cloud computing in Southeast Asia.
“This investment will open doors for Thai businesses, innovators and communities to harness the power of the cloud and artificial intelligence“, said Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Google and its parent company Alphabet.
Google's expansion in Thailand will add $4 billion to the kingdom's GDP by 2029. and will create 14,000 jobs between 2025 and 2029, according to a report by consulting firm Deloitte.
Thailand is Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, but its technology sector still lags behind countries like Singapore and Indonesia. The government hopes Google’s investment will help diversify and modernize the kingdom’s economy.
SpaceX in Vietnam
Meanwhile, Vietnam is seeking to move beyond its traditional role as a hub for manufacturing shoes, clothing and furniture to a higher level. The country is seeking to take advantage of opportunities presented by U.S. actions and become less dependent on China for key resources, including high-tech chips.
Vietnamese state media recently reported that Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans to invest 1.5 billion USD to develop its Starlink satellite service in the communist country.
„The Vietnamese government is reviewing SpaceX's investment proposal“, said Vietnamese President Tho Lam. He has asked the US company SpaceX to work closely with relevant parties in Vietnam to effectively complete the preliminary preparations for investment.
Thailand and Vietnam have good chances to become even more attractive to digital nomads. These countries already have a high level of technological development and after such large-scale investments, those who want to move will have even more opportunities for remote work and a comfortable life.
