Tragic incident on “Alexander Stamboliyski” Blvd. in Plovdiv. A cyclist died on the spot after falling down an unsecured manhole. The incident was reported at 3:40 p.m. on Sunday.
The press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that policemen and firefighters removed the cyclist's lifeless body. His identity has not yet been established. He is of an apparent age of 60-65 years, specifies Nova TV.
In this case, pre-trial proceedings have been initiated for causing death by negligence.
Repair works on the roadway have been ongoing in the area for two years. On both ends of it, metal structures have been placed to prevent passing through the reconstructed section, but in places they are compromised and cyclists and drivers pass through them.
The mayor of the “Southern” Atanas Kunchev clarified that the repair works are not the responsibility of the municipality and transferred the responsibility to the Water and Sewerage, which is the contractor for the reconstruction. However, from there they say that the contractor is a capital company. According to its manager, Tihomir Krastev, the mine was secured. He stated that fence panels and road signs regularly became objects of theft.
