Students are celebrating today!
Over the years, December 8 has become a holiday not only for students at Sofia University, but for all graduate candidates.
This is the day on which the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, according to the old style, commemorated the Seven Saints and among them Saint Kliment Ohridski (November 25 according to the new style), considered one of the patrons of Bulgarian higher education.
His celebration began in 1903. on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the then only Higher School in the Principality of Bulgaria, the date becomes a holiday for all students in Bulgaria.
The decision for the holiday was made by the Academic Council of the Alma Mater on November 30, 1902
The celebration was canceled after 1944. and has been replaced by November 17, which is International Students' Day. In 1962 the Sofia University holiday on December 8 has been restored.
At a meeting of the Council of Rectors on October 28, 1994. it has been decided that December 8 will be a non-school day and a holiday for Bulgarian students, reports manager.bg.
