Newly elected US President Donald Trump said that he spoke with Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky and suggested that he run for prime minister of Canada.
“I just spoke with Wayne Gretzky, who is known in hockey circles as “the great“. I said to him, “Wayne, why don't you run for prime minister of Canada, you won't even have to campaign“, Trump wrote on his Truth Social page.
The 63-year-old four-time Stanley Cup winner and NHL leading scorer showed no interest in the idea, Trump added.
In late November, Trump said that he would impose heavy tariffs on goods from Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said such measures would kill the Canadian economy, to which Trump responded that Canada could possibly become the 51st state of the United States. This phrase caused nervous laughter from the Canadian prime minister, and Public Safety Minister Dominique LeBlanc assured that Trump was just joking.
