The executors of the artist's estate filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The document states that at the end of Jackson's life, his assets became subject to claims by creditors. Some of the debts carry with them extremely high interest rates. The number of creditor claims against Jackson has exceeded 65.
In 2018, funds from Jackson's estate were spent on legal and other expenses. The estate administrators settled or resolved most of the claims.
