Five hundred US National Guard troops were mobilized today in the area of the American city of Chicago, Illinois, as part of President Donald Trump's large-scale operation in relation to immigrants, world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.
The mission caused the dissatisfaction of local authorities, who filed a lawsuit to block the deployment of the units, notes Agence France-Presse.
About 200 guardsmen from the state of Texas and 300 from Illinois have been mobilized, the US Army announced last night.
The statement says that "the soldiers provide protection for immigration and customs services".
The deployment of the guards by the Republican Trump administration has been challenged in court by representatives of the Illinois Democratic Party.
A hearing is scheduled for today before District Judge April Perry, the Associated Press reported. A motion was filed Monday to block the deployment of National Guard personnel in Chicago and the state of Illinois as a whole.
