Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his US counterpart Donald Trump for his efforts to mediate a truce in the Middle East, while sharply criticizing the Nobel Committee for its decision to award the prize to people who, in his opinion, "have done nothing for peace", TASS reports.
Putin's statement was made during a press conference in Tajikistan.
A little later, Trump responded to Putin's words with a brief "thank you" from his social media pages.
"It's not my job to judge whether the current US president deserves the Nobel Peace Prize - I don't know. "But he really does a lot to resolve complex crises that have been going on for years, even decades," the Russian leader said, answering the question of whether the US president is worthy of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to Maria Corina Machado from Venezuela, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced hours ago. The laureate is being recognized for her work in promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her fight to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy, according to the committee's reasons.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the decision not to award the Nobel Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump was “complete nonsense”, RIA Novosti reports.
“This is complete nonsense. Trump deserved this Nobel Prize. It should have been awarded to him. For all reasons. Especially for the reason that in recent years the Nobel Prize has been awarded to everyone...“, Lukashenko told Channel One of Russian television on the sidelines of the CIS summit in Dushanbe.
Lukashenko pointed out that Trump “has done a lot for peace“ and that this decision is “short-sighted“.
