Polish President Karol Nawrocki said the country has the potential to become a regional hub for US natural gas supplies, PAP reported, BTA reported.
After his meeting with colleagues from the Visegrad Four in Hungary yesterday, he stressed the importance of stronger infrastructure ties between countries in the Central and Eastern Europe region - including gas and electricity interconnectors
Nawrocki noted that Poland has been in talks in recent years about natural gas supplies through an expanded system of interconnections, and its sea access puts it in a position to take “responsibility“ for energy supplies to the region. He said the talks were at an advanced stage.
The Polish president said he had discussed with his Czech, Slovak and Hungarian counterparts the possibility of American gas reaching Central Europe through Polish infrastructure.""Poland could be a hub for our region and I have already reached preliminary agreements with US President Donald Trump", he said.
The goal, he said, is to gradually limit Russian influence in Europe. According to Nawrocki, this is an issue that is directly related to the security of the countries in the region. The Polish head of state warned that it would be a mistake to perceive the war in Ukraine only as a bilateral conflict, pointing to Russian hybrid operations and attacks on critical infrastructure in Europe.
He stressed that a strong US and NATO presence remained key to security in the region and protection from threats emanating from the "resurgence of Russian imperialism".
