Re-elected: Kim Jong-un remains general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea - 1

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been re-elected for a new term as general secretary of North Korea's ruling party, the KCNA news agency reported on Sunday, quoted by Reuters.

This happened at the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, which began on Thursday. During the congress, members of the party's Central Committee were also elected and changes to the party's constitution were adopted, the KCNA reported, without providing further details about the changes.

A report by the Workers' Party of Korea credited Kim Jong-un with raising North Korea's prestige, creating an international environment conducive to the revolutionary struggle, and strengthening the country's military power "into an elite and powerful army."

Under his leadership, North Korea's military deterrence capabilities through the country's nuclear forces were radically improved.

The ruling Workers' Party of Korea congress, the country's largest political event, is held every five years.
