UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and called on all parties to respect international law and the ceasefire, quoted by the UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
„The Secretary-General welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire by the United States and Iran. "He calls on all parties to the current conflict in the Middle East to fulfill their obligations under international law and to respect the ceasefire in order to pave the way for a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region," the statement said.
The statement also noted that a cessation of hostilities is urgently needed to protect civilians.
The UN Secretary-General also expressed his gratitude to Pakistan and other mediators for their assistance in establishing a ceasefire.
