Kazakhstan authorities allocated 2.2 billion tenge (4.9 million USD) that had previously been illegally withdrawn of the country, to combat the consequences of large-scale floods, the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office announced.

The department recalled that they continue to work for the return of illegally acquired property to the state. “According to the results of the last meeting of a special commission headed by the Prime Minister, assets worth 24 billion tenge (53.6 million USD) have been converted into state income. The Asset Recovery Committee replenished the special state fund with 2.2 billion tenge. According to the instructions of the president, these funds are aimed at eliminating the consequences of the floods in the country”, the announcement says.

The General Prosecutor's Office noted that the funds expected to be received in the future will also be directed to social projects in the affected regions.

In June 2022, the President of Kazakhstan Kasim-Jomart Tokayev signed a decree on the creation of an interdepartmental commission that will deal with the return of funds illegally withdrawn by citizens of the republic abroad.

Due to flooding that began in March, a local state of emergency remains in eight regions of Kazakhstan. During this period, the rescuers evacuated a total of almost 118 thousand people. Currently, 5,718 private residential buildings and 1,130 yard areas remain flooded in Akmola, Aktobe, Kostanay, Atyrau and North Kazakhstan regions. Water was removed from 4,216 residential buildings and 2,698 yards. Over 46,000 people, over 4,000 pieces of equipment and 16 aircraft are involved in the rescue operations.
